5th Axis Inc. Receives 100% on ISO 9001 and
Aerospace Recertification Audit Score

Firm Implements New Automated Machinery to Save Clients Time and Money

San Diego—February 2010—5th Axis Inc. (www.fifth-axis.com) executives reported today that the facility was audited and received a 100 percent score on its ISO 9001:2000 and AS9100 Recertification. 5th Axis specializes in 5-axis machining which indicates that the machines can move a part to any position at any angle. The robotic nature of 5-axis machining allows complete parts to be built in one machining cycle which greatly reduces labor costs and scrap. Parts with odd-angles and complex curved surfaces such as turbines and impellers can be built effortlessly with 5-axis precision technology.

“We realize that 100 percent scores are very rare, so we are extremely pleased,” said 5th Axis co-founder Steve Grangetto. “We consider this a reflection of our company’s dedication to performing at peak levels, commitment to quality manufacturing and operating with the best equipment available.”

The company’s latest equipment purchase is the Mikron HSM 400U, currently operational at the company’s new 21,000 square-foot headquarters, a move necessitated by increased customer demand. The machine is integrated with robotic automation which allows it to run “lights out,” overnight or even on weekends. This is one of the most rapid, precise 5-axis machines that exists. It has a 42,000 rpm spindle and is ideal for small medical, military or aerospace components.

Scheduled for delivery this spring is a DMG HSC-55 along with an Erowa robotic pallet loading system. The DMG 5 axis milling center is ideal for medium size parts and is blinding fast with a 28,000 rpm spindle and 3400 inches per minute travel. The Erowa robotic work cell will also be integrated with the Hermle C30. This machine is well suited for medium and larger parts and also has full 5-axis capabilities.

The combination of the Mikron, DMG and Hermle machines gives 5th Axis the finest 5-axis equipment in the world for small, medium and large parts. This cutting edge equipment combined with full automation is what sets 5th Axis apart from the pack and is fast becoming one of the most sophisticated machine shops in the country.

Grangetto explained that the robots will save on labor and energy costs. “Instead of paying a person to load and unload each part, the pallets are loaded with all the material, and the machines and robots do the rest, he said. The increased efficiency will translate into faster deliveries and reduced cost to the customer.
